It is believed the Dorset breed had its beginnings when Merino sheep were crossed with the Horned Sheep of Wales. The Merinos were brought to southwest England by the Spanish and the resultant crossbreeds soon spread over most of Wales and into Dorset, Somerset and Devon.
The Dorset breed of sheep is known for producing new season or spring lambs early in the season. They are a moderate size. Fed mainly on milk, the meat is delicate, succulent and creamy.
